Haribol! Can someone please tell me (or better yet, explain to me) why male devotees are called 'das' or 'dasa' and female devotees are called 'devi dasi'? Shouldn't both names contain the word "devi" (e.g.L devi dasa & devi dasi)?

Re: Newbie question....
Fri, September 30, 2005 - 9:55 AMthink of it like this: a womans name is satarupa (my wife) it is not then after devi-dasi, but, rather SATARUPA-DEVI dasi. devi means goddess, a reference to the laksmi within. male devotees (although spiritually female) are usually named after male persoanlities, hence the suffix dasa, and women usually named after vedic women, who always have the suffix devi (which can be compared to english title "lady" like lady diana, etc) i always was a lil jealous of that .... hmmmmmmmmmmmm -
