Re: simply wonderful
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 10:40 PMI was blessed with the honor of making the simply wonderfuls for the Ratha Yatra in LA last years. A few hundred. If I recall corectly, it was a pound of butter mixed with enough milk powder to make it a dough & lots of sugar... uh, not sure how much. But I didn't use vanilla. They were good enough without it. And I know you can't taste it while you're making it to be sure of the amount of sugar. -

Re: simply wonderful
Fri, May 19, 2006 - 10:52 PMI think I remember now: in a large bowl, knead with your clean hands 1 pound of preferably organic butter (Krsna doesn't need all those nasty hormones & antibiotics in His food & neither do you) until it's mushy but still solid. With your hands measure in enough dry milk powder (OG of course) until it becomes a fairly solid dough mixture. Pull off pieces & roll into a ball about ping-pong ball sized, then roll in powdered sugar (OG is available) until coated so they don't stick together. Put them in the freezer or refrigerator until solid enough that you can handle them without them losing shape.
I found lots of nice recipes (except this one, which I pulled out of my memory) on this site:

Re: simply wonderful
Sat, May 20, 2006 - 7:13 PMwe make them by creaming the butter and sugar together 1st- then u add milk powder until it forms a nice pliable dough. add 2 tbsp cream to make it the consistancy of a medium soft fondant. THEN roll into balls. u can make many different kinds of pera (simply wonderfuls) by adding carob chips, or carob powder to the butter n sugar, different essences, like vanilla, orange, rose etc. u can add sliverered almonds. decorate with edible flowers etc.
all of this makes wonderful presentation for krsna.

Re: simply wonderful
Sun, May 21, 2006 - 1:42 AMYeah... sugar in the mix. Man, I'm thinking way too much about this recipe. All I remember is that I didn't use any exact measurements, just my hands as scoops. I liked using the milk powder because of the texture it imparts. Kind of grainy, all yummy. -
